Understanding Your BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated using your weight and height. It's a simple and widely used method to categorize individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on their body composition.
BMI Categories
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
- Obese (Class I): BMI 30 to 34.9
- Obese (Class II): BMI 35 to 39.9
- Extremely Obese (Class III): BMI 40 or higher
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has some limitations. It doesn't directly measure body fat or account for factors like muscle mass, bone density, and overall body composition. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without excess fat. Always consult with a healthcare provider for a comprehensive health assessment.
